My personal experience is that ALL short options, even out-of-the-money ones , have assignment risks. (Of course, it would be irrational for options holders to exercise out-of- the-money options, but some still do, just because they have the right to do so.) The closer it is near the money, the greater the assignment risk. For Friday expiries, I used to get assignment notice on Saturday afternoon. Different brokers may vary. Technically, options don't expire until the next day; Friday expiries actually "expire" on Saturday. For example, if AMD closes at 27.51 today, but it trades at 21.00 in after-hours. A 27.5P holder can buy 100 shares at 21.00, and ask his broker, between 4PM - 5:30PM ET, to exercise his expiring 27.5P at strike 27.50.

Your broker might vary. Take IB for example, I recall master test3 says IB might preemptively liquidate (some random legs of) your short options positions at around 3: 15PM ET, if it thinks you might not have enough margin to take assignments.
