Just got my first salary payment, federal tax, social socity tax and
medicare tax were witheld.

in my understanding, it is not about the status when you are working, but
the
status to file tax return. Say you will file non-resi for 2008, then let
your
employer know and they will stop withholding fica and refund whatever
withheld.
alternatively, you may get refund from IRS in 2009

I think if you are in US more than 5 years, you should pay SSN tax and
Medicare. If less than that, and you are F1 not H1B, you do not need to pay
those, and you could ask payroll office to reimburse that back (I ever did
that before.).
