The question is, (1) if we file the state tax together, which state should we file? How do we do for the other state tax? (2) if we file the state tax seperately, how do we fill the "federal adjusted gross income"? Divide the amount? but how? I really appreciate your help, thanks!

you need split your joint income accordingly (all income sources). this sometime can be very frustrating. i've done it for a few years, and will do this year too.

Thank you for your answer, APHH. let's make it clearly. For example, if my taxable income is $40000, my wife $10000. then I 80%, she 20%. if the adjusted gross income is $40000, then I will fill $32000 and she $ 8000. am I right? Did you face any problem for your tax return?

co-ask 有朋友说,应该填两个 jointly state tax form,在各自州的form里面,减去你们在另 一个州的收入。这样就不会多报了。 正想试试填一下。有填过的朋友请确认一下。谢谢

No, it doesn'w work this way. First, you need to find out filing status for state A and B. Most states require the same status as federal return, but there are some states allow you to file separate return even your federal return is joint. Second, split income between two states (if you file jointly) is not the way you said in your post. Read both states' instructions. I think you need to start with federal AGI for most states, you can either take out the salary ( any other income) earned in ot
