You don't have to have it, but I have it for two reasons:
1. Useful reference describing the core LaTeX and too many additional
packages. If you are serious about learning LaTeX, this is the book to
have on your desk.
2. It helps support the LaTeX development team's efforts. I've met some
of these developers and they are really nice people who have donated
years to making LaTeX what it is. If I am forced to pay for MS Word, a
piece of software I greatly detest but must own because I need to

You mean first and second editions? The first edition (which has the dog
on the cover) is more than 10 years out of date. You want the second
edition, which has a green-white cover with the picture of a compass.
I'm not aware that there is a third edition. The publisher is Addison
Wesley Longman, and the authors should be Mittelbach, Ratz, Rowley,
Goossens, etc. (I don't remember exactly who, but these are all on the
core LaTeX project team).

year.
the problem is 3rd edition is sold in a boxed set (4 books total) at amazon,
