Thanks a lot.
But for "rup" command, it can only detect the host with
"rstatd" daemon. Can we
have other solutions?

Try arp.

download some software like nmap which scans a subnetwork
for a lot of info, does inlude the up hosts.
or you can just write a simple socket program for UNIX shell
scripts to test to do it.

if the host does not respond broadcast ping, it will not
respond to arp request either, but like mentioned in another reply
nmap might be a good way,

Why is this always true? How do you disable ARP in the
kernel? These dosent
seems to be a way in the kernel code. I am really curious.

well, don't take me wrong,
host does respond arp request to its own IP, but won't
respond to arp request for broadcast add,
they are two different issues
