unless you have other reasons, usually you should choose a simulator
that is widely used so other people can easily understand your simulation
and compare results. results are easier to be published as well.

this is a very popular one an academic world. still being actively
maintained and developed.
too out of date. the development stopped quite a while ago. there was
a start up trying to commercialize the simulator but don't think it is
going anywhere. keshev made several millions though.

NS is good and u and develop whatever u want based on it, like
ucla has a SensorSim based on ns for distributed sensor networks.
Easy installation and re-compliation, and there's still on-going
research work on it.
