i dl some paper from online with *.ps.gz format.
i thought they are compressed files and tried to use
gzip or gnuzip to decompress but always comes out like
" they are not in gzip format"
then later i found they are simply postscript files or
some "compressed ps files" and can be viewed directly
by ghostview.
anyone knows why or what is it? thanks.

perhaps your browser decompress the file in downloading, but do not
change the file name. you can check the file format by command:
file your_file_name

rt, i just use this to know they are ps files actually.
so, some browsers can do this? interesting...

I would guess that's because the one posted the file online made a mistake --
it is actually just a ps file.
I encounter such problem several times and everytime I just open it directly
as a ps file and it works.

Sometimes netscape can directly unzip .gz file and
show the content of the file in brower.Really cool!

you have to have a plugin bah. I don't know any ps plugin, anyone knows?

yeah, sometimes it's the browser's problem. I also encountered this problem
a lot. IE didn't unzip while Netscape sometimes do.

however, i use IE...
i still think there is some kind of "Compressed Postcript"
which may be viewed directly by ghostview, maybe because
ghostview has build-in decompressor. maybe i am wrong.
i think they are compressed by something else but not
regular pkzip, gzip, gnuzip...
