We have an IBM RS/6000 machine, model 44p-170, bought
2002. It had AIX installed on it but recently we had a
harddisk failure. Then we think we can install
GNU/Linux on it, probably Debian. But we are able to
boot the Debian power pc installation CD from the
internal cdrom it has. After some google searching, I
found people saying that the firmware(SMS) is too old
and needs upgrade in order to boot the cd. Fine, I
made those firmware installation floppies but then
found out we actually need a ru

170 bought in 2002 should be able to boot from CDROM no problem. Were you
able to get into SMS menu upon booting then change the bootlist?
