I know there is a directory there, but it is not listed when I use "ls -l".
However, after "cd" to the directory and then "cd ..", I can see it by "ls -l"
.
Could any one explain it to me.

It's automounted. The first access will cause it to be mounted, so you could
list it. It will disappear after a while if you stop accessing it.

You might right. It did disappear after a while.
What is the purpose, for security?

Mainly performance. Google automount.
