When company cut him the check, they deducted taxes.
He got a form 1098-T from the school stating his billed tuition fee.

PhD program? So is it legal to get scholarship or fellowship from school

ask your company about it.
If you have been taxed on that reimbursement, the reimbursement was
considered taxable income by your company, and should have been reported on
W2. in that case, you can use learning credit form to claim back the tax.

卡车要专门的licence，现在失业率这么高，去排队的话估计能排到后年，而且至少要卡
餐馆现在打工也难，保月报吃饱住一年下来能挣个postdoc工资回来，不过机会也少多了

go back and calculate your total wages last year and see if there is any
difference btw that and w2 box 1 amount. if so, it might be the tuition
reimbursement.
