Dear Xun,
I am indeed one of the doctors who assisted in the diagnosis and treatment
of Zhu Ling. I also visited Beijing in October, 1998 and spent time with
Zhu Ling and her family.
The source of the thallium was, according to what I was told by sources in
China, from a young woman, a contemporary of Ling, who was in
competition with Ling for a fellowship in the USA, and allegedly, this
woman poisoned Zhu Ling so that she (the other woman) could get the
fellowship. It is my understanding that the police investigated this, but
did
not make any charges against the alleged poisoner.
It is also my understanding that the U. S. Embassy did not issue a visa for
the young woman who was suspected of doing the poisoning and that she
did not go to the U. S.
My last information about Ling's medical condition was that she was
having increasing breathing difficulties and the prognosis looked bad. She
is indeed severely impaired. If you will go to my Website and look at my
list of publications, you will find an article which I wrote regarding Zhu
Ling's case:
