I think one thing they can do is to ask relative of passengers to check for
transaction of the credit card on the date/time of the plane.
If the credit card has transactions after transponders turned off, which
means at least the flight attendant is still working.
These days lots of people like to buy stuff on airplane, especially Chinese.
