Lived in Korea for five years, have a Korean fiancee. In that time I
suffered numerous instances of racism including physical assault (minor),
verbal assault (major), false arrest, not being allowed in certain bars/
clubs etc. etc. But that was nothing, the worst thing was how my fiancee was
treated by Korean people simply for falling in love with a Western person.
Strangers on the street calling her a slut, her dad basically disowning her,
girls in a nightclub threatening to beat her up, harassed by colleagues at
work when they found out. Even worse, I have friends with mixed ethnicity
children, they are bullied at school not only by the fellow students, but by
their teachers too. I don't think this a positive 'extra special'? They
even have entire TV shows dedicated to villainising mixed race couples, it
got so bad many mixed race families held a sit-down protest in front of the
biggest Korean broadcaster's head office.
Sure, if you just spend a couple of years living as an expat in Korea I can
see how you can come to the conclusion you have come to, as in some non-
meaningful ways, on the surface, they might give you a little discount or
ask you to speak to their kid. But, try getting any deeper into Korean
society and you see (at least I did) the true racism. I have many friends in
Korea who have suffered the same and are now either trying to find a way of
moving their family away from Korea or, like me, have done so.
Of course, this isn't always the case. I have some friends who were welcomed
by their Korean partner's family with open arms. I had Korean friends who
were wonderful people without a single racist bone in their body. I have a
very good relationship with my fiancees mum and her best friend has also
become one of my best friends. To say all Koreans are racist would make me
no better than the racists themselves. However, in MY experience living
there the further I got into Korean society the more racism I encountered.
