我在美国生活了二十多年，在餐馆打工近十年，常常遇到有华人顾客光临，酒足饭饱以后，就是账单和小费的问题。桌面上会传来收敛或是高声的关于tip的讨论和计算。
这时候，您已经犯了第一个错误啦：小费的英文是tips，不是tip。
不就是得用复数吗？
不是。小费这个词源于18世纪英国伦敦，有些饭店的桌中摆放一个空碗，上面写：to insure prompt service。顾客如果零钱放入碗中，会得到迅速而周到的服务。您把上面几个英文单词的头一个字母联起来，就知道为什么必须说这个“s”啦。
不过，经过多年的演化，tip本身既可以做名词（小费），也可以做动词（给小费）了。
到底留多少小费呢？给您一个简单的建议：中餐15%, 晚餐20%。好记吧？

tip是简化式，现在也常用于名词（小费）和动词（给小费）。

我在中餐buffet店干的时候反而是华人给小费最好，老美很多人很虚伪，根本不给。印
度人就跟别指望了。

风俗吗。这个是自愿的。再举个例子，
由于老工比较胖，所以每次都是我在上面，时间长了就觉得一点意思也没有，和他在一
起从来没有过高潮的感觉。现在擦擦对于我来说不再是最美好的事而变成了一种折磨，
我害怕每一个夜晚的到来，我讨厌看到他那肥胖的肚皮，讨厌听到他粗重的喘息，这一
切都让我感到恶心，我不知道我还能怎么去拒绝他，这样的生活想起来都会让我窒息，
我真的烦透了。

TEPS rather than TIPS?
Because tips are given at the end of meals rather than when ordering, it
does not make sense to say that tips can "ensure prompt service" after the
service has been performed.

insure 和 ensure 几乎是完全可以通用的。
唯一的区别是保价时用insure。
在18世纪伦敦，小费是吃饭前给的。

I know many people misuse "insure" vs "ensure". Since you said the acronym
originated in 19th century England, the issue could be even more complicated

这个不是misuse。
Insure 除了在经济上保险以外，
也有 make certain by taking action and precautions 的意思，
不一定involve 金钱。
“insure prompt service”是完全正确的。

关于insure和ensure，最好使用正规编撰的大字典，比如webster韦氏大字典。

you insist that paying to get good
service is kind of an insurance because money is involved, I would not argue

我的意思是，即便不涉及金钱，一样可以用insure这个词。
请你再看一遍韦氏词典对insure的第二个解释：

I was aware of this。
wiki没有对tips给出任何正面解释。只是否定了"To Insure Prompt Service"。
然后提出了"to give; to hand, pass"的说法"very uncertain".

指出你一处明显错误，另外凡是自称在餐馆打过工的却没指出来的都是在胡编乱造。
餐馆里的大师傅是拿工资的，不和 waiter 分小费。和 waiter 分小费的只有前台
负责领位子的。我知道有的餐馆大厨是入伙有股份的，这样大厨积极性高一些，也

服务员收入完全靠小费在中餐馆尤其是中式自助餐挺普遍的。
这时候，客人不留消费，服务生就喝西北风。
服务生可以告老板的，可是，大多数服务生本身也是非法打工，投鼠忌器。
