Sorry for the long post!
I have a Lenovo x60 with Vista Enterprise installed. I recently did a
system store, which freezed on me. I thus rebooted it, but it failed,
and an error message appeared saying that "hal.dll" file missing or
corrupted. Since I didn't have the Vista installation disk handy, I
tried to load my old windows xp, and managed to get it installed,
under a different directory. But once I logged in the xp, I could see
the old data file folders, and nothing was inside each folder (

你的data folder位于哪里？
harddrive根目录下还是什么别的地方？

put your harddisk into an external enclosure, and connect it to another
vista machine, recover your data first.
rememver, always backup!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ you did not set the ownership
so the folder shows 0 bytes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ should not reinstall anything
before you retrieved your data

In the new Vista, they are under "windows.old". The problem is that I can
see the folder names, but nothing is inside. Is there a way to get back to
my old Vista (which failed to reboot).

Can you please elaborate on how to take the ownership? A step-by-step

I tried it, still didn't work. Now I sent it to get some professional help,
and have managed to get some files recovered.
