By the way, how did they do it? I thought sys-info was auto checked
by the Windows OS. Unless they had the source code and recompiled?

很古老的招数了，以前是PII谎称PIV，跑WIN98，现在进步了，进入vista了
一般是改BIOS，比如把390E对应的信息比如字符串和特征值改成7400，内存硬盘也都类
似的改，windows也是属于被骗者。光改windows的话，开机画面一看就露馅了。

thanks, then it makes some sense.
However, it's so easy to detect info such as hard drive size or
CPU type by a few lines of code. Why did Windows rely on the BIOS
for such vital information?

这个可能是依赖于场合了. 有些时候可能需要"计算"出具体数值,比如系统performance
,这个是相对最可靠的,自然也只有个大体的标称值; 但大多数情况仅仅需要从database
/table里面找到个id就好,这种情况一般不会对系统正常运行产生影响,大都是个参考性
指标,BIOS一般情况下已经足够基本可靠,毕竟没事改这东西的不多; 还有些场合像某些
测试软件一样自己maintain个database,加上专用指令和计算,这个就比较准了.
对本帖这个case,自己带几个测试软件,大部分都能识破. 甚至如果见的多了,看看外观,
再听听骗子说的就知道咋回事了. 都不懂也没关系,知道天上不会掉馅饼就不会受骗.
