traffic volume is not much. But connection speed
and stablity is important. People don't like to
see their command appear on screen 1 sec later
than their key stroke. Big memory helps too. :)

Is there any number on this?
I would like to know some solid number on how much
traffic would a small mud server, say 20 ppl, generate.

That's why Dsl is better than CableModeom for playing mud.

sorry I don't have any numbers. But I never noticed any network
load even when there was as much as 30 connections.
