As my understanding, apply H1-b, actually is the company files the application,
you are only the 'beneficiary', and your lawyer is actually represent the
company, not you, to deal with INS. In this case, I don't know if you could
DIY, since you don't normal have the legal permission. Even if you could,
consider with what you can get from a H1 job, it doesn't worth to take the
risk. Also you can take the legal fee as Tax deduction.
