I have a few questions regarding relationship with boss/indirect boss. Any
comments is appreciated:
I work in a medium-sized company as an individual contributor. I report to
my manager Maria ; Maria reports to her manager John.
Maria notified John that she would be out of office this week. On Monday
John let us know about Maria's vacation. John then asked me if things are OK
on projects, and stuff like "if you need any assistance please let me know"
blah blah. I assured him that everything is fine, and added that I can give him an project update if he wants. He agreed and set up an appointment for Friday
between I and him. This would be the first update between me and John in
probably a year or two. John does not always keep a very close eye on what we (Maria's group) is doing.
My questions are:
1. Was it a reasonable move to offer a project update for John? I figure
that if he is my bosses' boss, I'd better have opportunity to tell him what
I have done -- in a positive way. Of course I should keep an upbeat
tone and carefully craft words so that they are in line with Maria.
2. Shall I tell Maria we had an update after she returns? My thinking is yes
Maria and John have good working relationships.
3. Shall I tell Maria that I OFFERED to give John an update ? The conversation between em and John happened when Maria was unavailable. I do not want to jeopardize my relationship with Maria by giving her the impression that I did something behind her back.
4. The project involves another staff member in Maria's group. Shall I
include my co-worker in the update as well?

Talk to your Institute ISSO to confirm it. Some Institutes cannot do this
way.
