XML is still very new. Many people still don't understand why we should

is it some sort of web service or what? otherwise, why bother?
which too do you use to do the transformation? software application or IE?

Hehe, I have done the same project in China 1 years ago.
I don't think it is newer here.

What do they use XML for? Storage, data exchange...?

ＸＭＬ最大的好处统一了商业逻辑的数据层，也就是所有的商业逻辑的输入输出均用ＸＭ
Ｌ表达，从而实现数据交换的可能。另外对后台数据库的无关性也是很重要，同时ＸＭＬ
结合ＸＳＬＴ可以剥离数据层和表达层。数据一次生成（比如来自对数据库的查询），而
使用不同ＸＳＬ可以表达在不同的设备，例如ＷＭＬ，ＸＨＭＴＬ，ＨＭＴＬ，甚至Ｂ２
Ｂ之间ＸＭＬ的转换。微软力推的.net技术是以ＸＭＬ为基础的。

I also do that in china in 2000. but xml/xsl doesn't seems useful in
my application. We use is just for fun and scare our customers.
