just plug it in hub and it should work after you set TCP/IP right.
If you want to use appletalk to access your file over the network,
you need to get some software. I heard NT supports appletalk but
I have never tried personally. Linux works with appletalk fine.
Or at least you can work with ftp/http. Mac OS comes with a webserver...

First, go to MAC control panel, check TCP/IP. Whether you have Ethernet
Selection, if not, you have to set up you Ethernet card(by some
software installer)
if you don't have TCP/IP, you should have NETWORK instead
second,If you do have it and ony use as a local net at home.
not connect to Internet, you can give a random IP , I guess.
Otherwise, set it as DHCP, the subnet 255.255.0.0
Then , you have to got to Control panel, choose APPLETALK, then Select

To see your Mac in your Windows' Neiboughood, your machine(whatever
it is) needs to support samba. I don't know about anything on Mac
which can do this.
To see you PC in your Mac's Chooser, or Network Browser, you need
to set up an Apple Share Server on your PC. Your PC does not necessarily
need to run Apple Talk, because Apple Share now works over TCP/IP.
I haven't tried PCMac Lan, becoz it's not free.

The software "Dave" can make you connect to a Mac machine
under
DOS prompt. Then you can treat all Mac files like pc files.
If you have Dave installed, you can go to Mac's control
panel
to run "Dave Sharing" to share Mac directories out. Then you
can run "net use \\MacMachine\SharedDirName" in PC to
connect to
Mac machine.
The current version of Dave is 2.5. It only supports till
Windows
NT 4.0 w/ service pack 5.
