I had met a school like that last year. They phone interviewed for ~15 by the search committee chair and then picked ~8 for Skype interview with search committee, and picked 4 for onsite. I got eliminated after the phone interview but I do know that department didn't get anyone after all 4 on- sites. That was last year. They started again this year. What a waste of time....

What is your research field? Biology? Chemistry, or Physics? Thanks. I hope it is not the same school.

Biology, but that was the only school. All others follow similar strategy: either directly invite on-sites, or phone interview for 8-10 and invite 3-4 for on-sites.

If there are more than 200 applicants, it might be really hard for them to narrrow down to 8-10 candidates, though.

Not really. Most of schools indeed receive more than 200 but over 100 are 打 醬油. And then by picking who has funding/fellowship, who has PhD in the US, and who has significant papers, it is narrowed down to probably less than 500. And then, by selecting those with network and those whose research could produce collaboration in the department, probably only 10 are left. This is just my understanding. Each school may have different strategy. Like I know a department/school in midwest(let's not mention the name) that they only picked candidates with K99. In this case, the candidate number drops dramatically.

If they only pick candiates with external funding, that might be really tough. For the level of schools (liberal arts), I really doubt whether there are more than 200 applicants. Thank you very much following my post and I really appreciate for your opinions.
