SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung Electronics Vietnam's exports during the first half of
the year are in excess of US$10 billion. According to industry sources on
July 9, the export volume of Samsung's Vietnamese subsidiary from selling
mobile phones and smartphones was preliminarily tallied at $11.2 billion.
The first-half performance is almost 90 percent of what the company achieved
in the whole year of 2012.
This was largely thanks to the brisk sales in major markets including the
Middle East and Europe. In the United Arab Emirates alone, for example,
Samsung Electronics Vietnam sold about $1 billion worth of mobile devices
during the first half. The company expects to break the $20-billion level by
the year's end, way over the $16.5-billion export target for the year.
The company is the biggest mobile device manufacturer out of eight plants
across the world operated by Samsung, capable of producing 120 million units
of mobile devices a year. With more than 30,000 employees, it contributes
significantly to Vietnam's economic growth. Once a new Samsung plant being
built in Thai Nguyen Province in the northeast is completed, Samsung's
Vietnamese capacity will rise to 240 million units, cementing its position
as the world's largest mobile phone production base.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry estimates exports of cell phones and
components to exceed US$20 billion this year, the highest ever.
Ministry statistics show that in the first five months cell phones and
components topped exports, surpassing textile and garments, with a turnover
of $8.11 billion, a 113.64 percent rise year-on-year and accounting for 16
of the country's exports.
In 2012 they surpassed crude oil to become the second leading export item at
$12.7 billion, two times the previous year's figure.
Around 98.2 percent of the exports are, however, produced by foreign firms.
Major markets include the UAE, Germany, Austria, and India.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, most of the growth in
exports of cell phones and components came from Samsung's plant in the
northern province of Bac Ninh, which recently received approval to hike its
investment to $2.5 billion.
