No. It's like the other way around...
Affymetrix chips use synthesized 25-base long oligonucleotides as probes,
including perfect match and mis-match probes. A set (16-20 ) of probes are
designated to detect one transcript. So all the probes on the chip stand
for known genes, which is nice for reproducibility and further analysis of
your data, while could be a limitation too: you can only detect the expression
level of the probes they provide.
I haven't worked with the so-called "arrays", but as
