For those bull to be interviewed in a bull lab, shouldn't even come here to ask this question as P an A already eluded...one would pretty much know where/why one wants to go before the interview...
for ordinary joe like us, some preparation is
needed but still pretty much like what P said though...
well, first thing first: buyer or seller market?
for buyer market...not much you can do but to show the best side of you...1) demonstrate yourself with a nice presentation: concise and precise and know how: what how and why etc...when being questioned; Be mindful some questions are engineered to challenge/test you...
2) demonstrate you can think on your feet by asking intelligent questions; read their science and ask about it...
3) show your agreeable personality, matureness etc...don't only talk about science...
4) be yourself--after all you want to go to a place you wouldn't be stressed out all the time...
Seller market:
one need to know what one wants and then try to
figure those out over the trip...really you would only need one nice and
experienced person to dig out what you want to know...although more are
reassuring...
For our lab, when I meet a candidate, typically first one after the boss---I
normally volunteer to speak about the lab, the PI and the life to certain
extent based on what they care most in case they don't feel comfortable to
ask...I'll brief mention of the science if I sense he/she really cares about
that part. Not like many I have see, I rarely go into the details as it is
kind of useless for the candidate...
Of course, I may not speak of the negative side directly but I don't hide it
either, I never lie to a candidate...it would be up to them to pick the
hints up or not, judge good or bad...etc Sure, I judge the candidate too,
pretty much if a candidate can pass me, it will pass the lab, I'll try to
give them a hint too...if I sense it may not be a good fit, I'll try to
hint that in one way or another...
lastly, for an observing one, one doesn't even need to talk to anyone to
figure out the lab culture/atmosphere if hanging around in a lab for a day
or two...

就因为咱只有这么一个可心的，所以准备的那是相当充分呀，哈哈
话说除了postdoc，咱也面试了不少其他的嘛。。
你也应该来写写，我很想知道大家的感受是不是一样的。比如我面试的时候（非
postdoc类.面试哈），会了解每个面试者的性格，甚至到他/她的穿衣风格，然后尽量
match。。。是不是有点极端了。。。

基本都是这样的。
主意多聊天，多休息。有一次去一个实验室，一样的流程，那个实验室没老中，
也就没有聊天打屁的机会，通通是老美，各个热爱科学，通通都是讨论project，
我每分钟都在动脑，到了下午两点就要倒下了，连喝了两杯咖啡都搞不定

For those bull to be interviewed in a bull lab, shouldn't even come here to ask this question as P an A already eluded...one would pretty much know where/why one wants to go before the interview...
for ordinary joe like us, some preparation is
needed but still pretty much like what P said though...
well, first thing first: buyer or seller market?
for buyer market...not much you can do but to show the best side of you...1) demonstrate yourself with a nice presentation: concise and precise and know how: what how and why etc...when being questioned; Be mindful some questions are engineered to challenge/test you...
2) demonstrate you can think on your feet by asking intelligent questions; read their science and ask about it...
3) show your agreeable personality, matureness etc...don't only talk about science...
4) be yourself--after all you want to go to a place you wouldn't be stressed out all the time...
Seller market:
one need to know what one wants and then try to
figure those out over the trip...really you would only need one nice and
experienced person to dig out what you want to know...although more are
reassuring...
For our lab, when I meet a candidate, typically first one after the boss---I
normally volunteer to speak about the lab, the PI and the life to certain
extent based on what they care most in case they don't feel comfortable to
ask...I'll brief mention of the science if I sense he/she really cares about
that part. Not like many I have see, I rarely go into the details as it is
kind of useless for the candidate...
Of course, I may not speak of the negative side directly but I don't hide it
either, I never lie to a candidate...it would be up to them to pick the
hints up or not, judge good or bad...etc Sure, I judge the candidate too,
pretty much if a candidate can pass me, it will pass the lab, I'll try to
give them a hint too...if I sense it may not be a good fit, I'll try to
hint that in one way or another...
lastly, for an observing one, one doesn't even need to talk to anyone to
figure out the lab culture/atmosphere if hanging around in a lab for a day

基本都是这样的。
主意多聊天，多休息。有一次去一个实验室，一样的流程，那个实验室没老中，
也就没有聊天打屁的机会，通通是老美，各个热爱科学，通通都是讨论project，
我每分钟都在动脑，到了下午两点就要倒下了，连喝了两杯咖啡都搞不定

well, I was just thinking about seller's market. and I was also telling him/her, don't worry too much, some nice person like neverthink may just volunteer to tell what she/he wants to know......when I was writing up for the
buyer's market, u puked me:))....
BTW, u and P's may not be typical, you pretty much know you want to join the
lab...all you need was to put on a good show...for most of us, it shall be
a two way thing...
