what do you want to do in the long term? what's your passion in life and career? what's in tax law or mba that excites you? i'd love to provide helpful thoughts, but i always find it difficult to answer such questions as the ones you asked. nobody here knows about you and your interest better than you do. i disagree with you that returning to china will help you improve the odds of getting into a top mba program. graduating from a top program, i've seen my chinese classmates who had never worked outside china as well as those who had their entire career in foreign countries after college.
Thanks for your inputs. What confuses me is different choices mean different career tracks too. If I stay here, chances are rare for me move up in the field of management. And I don't think my current work experience would help me get into a top mba program either. So go for the law and combine my current background would provide a more specialized skill to survive in the states. Returning to China would give more chances to advance my career, not just in terms of getting into a top mba since i will eventually look for a job after graduation whatsoever. I'm interested in both law and corporate finance. Mba would give me more flexibility in choosing my specialization given that i have a few years to think about which direction i want to go. However, for jd, i don't think i have much time to figure out if tax attorney would be a good fit for me. And once it's decided, i dont think i'll have the chance to regret due to large time and money investment.
as seen

Hard to imagine anyone would be inerested in BOTH corporate finance and law. ..

It's possible. Corporate governance is always related to law, e.g. anti- takeover devices and corporate governance, see well-cited paper GIM QJE 2003 .

Forget about JD, $100k+ tuition and FOUR years of your life. Ask youself, can you afford another 4 years of school? Top MBA program is your best bet imo. What are your undergrad and grad schools? Also have you taken GMAT yet?
undergrad ~10 in china grad ~30 in US... any idea which tier mba I can reach?

just to give you an idea. my under ranks roughly 100 in China, and graduate school ranks around 60 in the us, i got admission to top 20 mba. mba is all about the total package. if you are not confident about urself, no one else does either.
