leisure版的网友问起文字优美的英文书,我推荐了Lamb,Hazlitt,Priestley等几个
英国散文家。网友又问具体文集,我手边的《英国散文名篇欣赏》里正好有些介绍,我
就抄上来一起分享。不过这几个作家都很早,尤其Lamb和Hazlitt。最好网上先找一两
篇试着读读,如果有兴趣,再去图书馆借文集……哈哈就我省钱。主要是担心买来书如
果读不进,太古奥或者生涩或者不对胃口,挺可惜的。上外编的这本《英国散文名篇欣
赏》,每篇之前都有作者介绍,选篇都有译文、赏析;即便这样,我本科读的时候还是
觉得难。有机会很想再读一读,与喜欢读英语的网友共勉。
Charles Lamb(1775-1834),散文家,评论家。生长在伦敦,父亲在内殿律师学院供
职,幼年在学府的宁静氛围和泰晤士河的自然风光中成长。喜好都市生活,伦敦是其文
学灵感的源泉。与Coleridge相识相知。在东印度公司干过32年。性情温和,充满幽默
,文风亦庄亦谐。姐姐神经失常,他照顾了她一辈子,终身未娶。姐弟俩共同改写莎剧
,出版了大众喜爱的读本《莎士比亚故事集》(Tales from Shakespeare)——有谁看过
吗?据说通俗易懂,文字也美,是Lamb最受欢迎的作品。懒得看莎剧原作+注释本的朋
友可以拿这本入手。他用伊利亚的笔名在杂志上发表系列散文,后结集为《伊利亚随笔
集》(Essays of Elia)、《伊利亚随笔续集》(The Last Essays of Elia),也很出名
。多为自传体,内容富有独创的想象力,情调感伤,笔意轻灵,富有诗韵。

William Hazlitt(1778-1830),散文家,批评家,英国浪漫主义时代三大散文家之一
,与Lamb和de Quincy并称而成就最大。性格孤傲,特立独行。早年习画,后受
Coleridge影响,转向写作。Lamb在伦敦把他引见给许多文坛名流,有名篇《初识诗人
》(My First Acquaintance with Poets),记叙和湖畔诗人相识的情景。他的散文内容
丰富,文采绚丽。典故很多,学识渊博,信手拈来;又运斤成风,文不加点,一泻千里
——我也写过从头到尾不加标点的文章。他的散文名集有《席间闲谈》(Table-talk)和
《直言者》(The Plain Speaker),另外莎剧剧评也很有名。

我觉得挺难的……他太旁征博引了,对西方文化不熟的人不太容易进入他渲染的气氛,
不太relevant似的。
J.B. Priestley是我觉得比较容易进入的,他时代也近(1894-1984),经常写农民、
手工艺者、普通劳动人民,怀念没落的手工艺时代,感慨今非昔比的工业时代,调子朴
素温和又有点感伤,很容易让我们这一代人感情代入。我看他的文章,还有Thomas
Wolfe的小说,都很有共鸣。他一战时当过兵,战后去剑桥读英国文学和近代史。然后
在伦敦给报刊写散文评论文起家。他还写戏剧,自己组建剧团巡演。他的戏剧颇有社会
主义倾向,《巡官登门》(An Inspector Calls)被改编成电影后翻译到国内,据说颇
受欢迎。我没看过,不过国内对他很早就有译介,王佐良的《英国散文流变》也专门介
绍过他,他的散文也被选入英语课本。的确好看。《散文名篇欣赏》里选了一篇"The
Toy Farm",正好就是写“古老的乡村梦想”的:

另外像George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster这些近现代作家也都更容易读
一点,思考的问题也和现代人接近,容易有共鸣。不过所有这些人都是作家,写东西都
很文,并不适用于日常公务交往,就是当作培养英语语感、了解文化背景啦。
