generally speaking, the peak width is inversely proportional to the life time of the vibrational excited state. So my guess is that the crystal structure will affect the coupling between neighbor molecules and thus change the life time.

I think you can. I've put a tube tester inside my luggage. I think security will open you luggage to check it out. You do need to carry the tubes yourself to avoid damage.
