Description
Role/Responsibilities:
The nanomaterials group is seeking a Research Scientist in our Danville, VA
location to support a number of programs involving the development of in
vitro molecular diagnostic assays and biosensors. Luna owns and operates a
nanomaterial manufacturing facility, conducts innovative research and
develops novel nanomaterial technologies tailored to meet specific
requirements for various applications in the defense and healthcare
industries. The establishment of Luna’s nanomanufacturing and research
facility is part of a regional effort to attract high-tech companies to the
Danville River District in partnership with private investors and state
funding.
Luna is developing novel molecular diagnostic assays to detect and
quantitate biomarkers in blood, urine, or tissue samples for the diagnosis
of toxic chemical-induced organ injuries, cancers, or bacteria and virus
infections. Luna is currently looking for an innovative scientist who will
provide molecular diagnostic assay development experience and expertise to
support assay and technology development, to drive future improvements and
to help expand the capabilities of our core technologies to new application
areas. The scientist will:
Perform studies focused on the design, development and optimization of
novel plasmonic and fluorescent immunoassays to detect and quantitate
protein, DNA and RNA biomarkers
Optimize sample preparation and detection approaches to improve
sensitivity and limit of detection
Demonstrate technical proficiency in molecular technologies and assay
techniques
Perform research related to improving and expanding core technology
capabilities
Investigate problem areas and achieve desirable assay improvement
Demonstrate high level analysis of experimental results
Provide data interpretation, written reports and oral presentations to
management and customers
Establish and accomplish quantitatively measureable technical milestones
Manage projects with minimum supervision
Communicate and interact daily with senior scientists and technicians
Write competitive research proposals and apply for SBIR funding from DOD
and NIH
Responsibilities and Requirements:
Ph.D. in molecular biology, bioengineering, analytical chemistry, or a
closely related field
Minimum two years’ post-doctoral experience working in research
laboratories
Hands-on biomarker detection and sensing technologies experience
Expertise developing assays using surface plasmon resonance platforms (
SPRi or LSPR), fluorometer, fieldable devices, or magnetic immunoassays is
ideal
Molecular medical diagnostics product development experience with
clinical samples a plus
Problem-solving skills combined with analytical skills and good
attention to details
Inventive, with ability to implement ideas in the laboratory
Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects
Work well in a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team environment
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Due to government contracting regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent
Residency is a firm requirement.
