If you are new to academia research, I can tell you something. If you don't agree, I am not interested in arguing. 1. People don't do research to "benefit the society". People do research because that's a job. You publish paper to establish credits to get funding , you get funding to lock on your job, you want to lock onto your job because you need to pay your bills. That's it. 2. You publish paper not because it is meaningful, but because there is funding opportunities in this area. Actua

I totally agree. Those research that claims benefitting the society are actually more practical industry project for commercial purpose. Most of research does not make sense. People are doing research because that's a job.

Although there may be many researchers acting like what you described, and although it's really none of my business, I feel compelled to say that there are always good advisors and they are really passionate on research. My advisor is an established and renowned professor. He is strict on students but never demands unreasonably. At a weekend he saw one of our post-docs working in the office. He praised him that "you are really a hard working employee." He just never expected us working after Fri
