I am glad that you have such a high rating for HKUST DB group.
But if you rate HKUST so high, maybe it's unfair for NUS, where Beng Chin Ooi
works.

HKUST 今年 SIGMOD 只发了1篇还素2篇哇
而且 Lu Hong jun 已经........ 虾米虾米了
NUS 今年发了9篇还素8篇.... ( 俺觉得有点匪夷所思, 明年铁定不会了 )
本来 SFU in CA 是不是也还不错的
可惜 Han Jia wei 去 UIUC 了

It seems that there are many db guys here. Maybe we can discuss something.
You know, currently there a big change in storage sysytems. Networked
storage systems(SAN, NAS, and SAN file system, etc) have evolved
to a new paradigm even for small and middle bussiness (3-20 servers,
0.5T to 10T data, less than 1000 employees), and I believe that direct-attached
storage will be replaced by networked storage in a few years
in business enviroments.
This change will pose a big management challenge to dat

........... 偶只是 NUS 的一个小本啊............
不过快毕业了, 正在考虑去哪里做 Master
所以现在也就只是关心关心哪个prof比较牛, 将来跟在手下做马仔拼命发几篇 paper
有个senior本科毕业以后在本校拿了master今年发了一篇SIGMOD
现在去Wisc了. 真羡慕

I don't think measuring the number of papers is the right way to evaluate
whether a group is strong. Wisconsin and Berkely do not have as many papers as
NUS, but their research results/products are being used by the rest of the
community. I deeply admire those people who produce impactful work rather than
bunch of papers on topics that interest no industry people.

看他们发论文真象灌水一样
请教搞db的内行一下，hkust, nus的db group
sigmod vldb发了这么多, stanford、ucb，wisc那个都不如他们
他们搞出点什么比较有impact的东西来没有？
比如high profiled systems或者搞了个新idea新领域别人都follow他们的？

感觉比较少，但是他们跟前沿跟得比较紧.

如果一定要排名次的话，根据近几年的表现，stanford, wisconsin的组比较沉寂，而
香港学校和NUS都比较活跃，尤其是NUS, Prof Ooi Beng Chin还作了sigmod的PC chair
，大概是07年吧。从paper质量来看，我觉得NUS的比香港的要强不少。当然也不能只用
paper来衡量。其实国内的学校也不错，最近北大清华都开始在sigmod, icde地会议上
面发表文章。其实国内的学生都不差，投入也很多，就是缺乏指导。还有就是学生自己
太懈怠，似乎对自己要求不高，只有出了国才能静心做研究。我们组来的一个intern,
在这里很用功，可是回到国内的学校，都找不到他人，和他合作写文章真是急死人。

这个。。。对死去的人还是要尊敬一些。我觉得陆对中国数据库的发展帮了不少，和国
内合作很多，不像有些人只管自己发展。

In my opinion, NUS should be moved to tier2 or tier1.
As NUS should be better than other tier3 groups， such as HKUST.

清华的Database，也只有Guoliangli一人。呵呵。
没有了Guoliang Li,清华的数据库档次要降不少吧

Your ranking seems to conform to my impressions.
However, I think that you have missed some important schools.
MIT is not strong in DB.
But MIT is not even in tier 3?
Also, Yale, Amherst, UCI,.....

其实很多传统名校都不错，比如duke。
portland state有个david maier，一下子排名就高了好多。

查了一下，UCI的CS人爆多，将近50，都快赶上UIUC了。
UC系列怎么都这么有钱，招这么多人？完全没经济危机的迹象嘛。

此人貌似不太有口德，以前看到过一个贴子说她把好些CS
系都BS了一番，一些业界研究所根本不在她老法眼里。
