I am having similar situation: need to stay in China for some time when I485
is pending.
However, I heard CP will take longer time and may not worth it.

It takes time (months) for them to schedule an interview for you. My
understanding is that an immigrant visa interview is scheduled by the US
Consulate General in Guangzhou on its own.
Also, it takes several months to process your I-824 to change from AOS to
consular processing.

First, you need file i-824 to let USCIS know you want change to consular
processing. The current processing time at NSC is Sep 15, 2011.
Even for consular processing, the officer still needs to request visa first,
but there is no visa for EB2-IC right now.

Once you convert to consular processing, you will no longer have I-485.
Whether you will get a green card almost entirely depends on whether you can
pass the interview for an immigrant visa.
