As mentioned by rappersk in an earlier post, we have been notified that
individuals with fraudulent intentions may have obtained username/password
combinations from a previous data breach that was unrelated to Best Buy or
its subsidiaries. Knowing that many people use the same username and
password for multiple accounts and services, these individuals are using the
obtained combinations in an attempt to gain access to information at retail
sites worldwide, including BestBuy.com. For additional information on this
fraudulent activity, please refer to the following notice on the Merchant
Risk Council’s website:
This situation is not the result of any breach of Best Buy systems and we
are working to take care of potentially impacted customers.
To ensure our customers’ privacy, Best Buy has notified customers directly
via e-mail if their accounts have been accessed by these unauthorized third
parties. We are also requesting that customers take the time to protect
their personal information by:
Updating the password associated with their BestBuy.com account
Developing passwords with more than 8 characters in length
Creating strong passwords and changing them often
Not using the same password across multiple accounts/services
Additional tips on how to protect your personal information can be found in
the Best Buy Privacy Hub and in the following guide:
Don’t forget -- if you believe your personal information has been
compromised, report it. Contact your bank, credit card company or other
service providers and forward any related e-mails to the Federal Trade
Commission at s**[email protected] Consumers are also encouraged to contact their
local authorities when/if such events occur.
