Noise figure (NF) is defined as the ratio of input SNR (signal to noise ratio) and output SNR. Because the a sistem (no matter it's an amplifier or sth else) generate noise itself, input SNR is always greater than output SNR. Therefore, NF is alway bigger than 1. NF is related to noise temperature (Tn) by: NF=Tn/293+1. Tn can be measured using Y factor method. Use two noise sources: hot source at high temperature (Th), and cold source at low temperature (Tl). And measure the output noise power.
