Miscellaneous Abbreviations
(a) Spell out governmental agencies, preferably on first reference, then
abbreviate if they are familiar:
Example:
Federal Communications Commission. Then FCC (no periods).
FBI and CIA can stand alone anytime. But try to avoid too much alphabet soup.
(b) As a noun, United States is spelled out. As an adjective, it can be U.S.,
as in U.S. spending (with periods, and closed together.) The same is true for
U.N., which also takes periods.
