In order to pursue higher education in the U.S. he had to resign from his
lucrative post in China.
p.s. he probably does need to brush up on his English before coming to study
in English...

I think it's better to say that he resigned his job to attend
school in the U.S. Don't say "prepare"; it could sound
like he quit the job in order to do the preparatory work
(take the GRE, submit applications), but later did not
actually go to the U.S.
