Let me start by saying that the work place is probably the most unforgiving,
judgmental place when it comes to what people wear and how they look. This
is because the office is a competitive environment -- you pretty much have
a conflict of interest with everybody around you. Everyone is consciously
or unconsciously trying to influence/manipulate others. And learning about
them through what they wear and how they carry themselves is a critical part
of the game.
A person who is put together and takes care of herself automatically gives
the impression that she is disciplined, pays attention to the details, and
has sufficient EQ to understand the social implications of how she looks.
Yes, you can say but our CEO comes to work in t-shirts and shorts -- well,
the CEO has already paid his dues and can afford not caring about how others
judge him by his looks, not you.
So, here are a few things that come to mind:
Being physically fit trumps everything. If you are a marathon runner and
regularly logs 25+ miles per week (which means you are probably an ace at
work too), you can pretty much get away with anything you feel like wearing
and still have respect from all the men and women.
Dress to your job and rank. The right to wear certain clothes in a work
environment has to be earned. For example, a high-end suit, expensive
designer shoes/bags/jewelry, etc., can only be worn after you've achieved a

It depends on so many things: what kind of work you do, her age, her looks,
her sense of security, her trust in you and other women , her marriage, her
sex life, her attitude toward men, the list goes on and on :)
Maybe you can describe a few things first: is she American or Asian? how
old is she? how does she dress? what kind of shoes does she wear? does
she take care of her hair/nails?

I admire not only your perspective on Fashion but also your way of writing,
again! Points very well taken..
I have to share the story again about an MD in my firm always wears bright
pink pants on casual friday -- a very entertaining look, but for sure he can
wear it only because he is an MD already and anyone lesser than him is not
supposed to do that and might very likely be reminded by HR!! A senior
woman in my team carries a birkin to work, but i would not do that even if i
have one, well, not yet :P --- i have to say i am acting according to your
rules most of the time although i did not really give it much thoughts when
it comes to what to wear at work..

code in Wall Street is at least 10 thousand miles apart from Silicon Valley

has to be earned.' This might also apply to cars.
But what if the clothes are expensive but low-key, not conspicuously flashy?
Like well-made but modest looking Italian suits for an entry level guy at
work?

果很快被我发现业务不行，就知道指手划脚，特会写巨长的email, 讨厌！俺公司真正

when talking abt dress code I assume we already exclude sillicon valley :p
client facing roles on WS probably have the most strict rules on how to
dress but I think lz's comments apply to most corporate settings

what is good abt lz's posts is that he is talking abt COMMEN-sense -- We
always miss one point or two here and there even we are very confident in
our own way of fashion. That is why some jms like this post better while
others think it is just commensense since they are alreay aware. For me i will buy what lz says for most part becasuse i believe I am subconciously following the rules that lz put down, it is good to bring things to the concious level though.

you will be competing with men in the old boy's club, in a 95% male
environment, on men's terms. And these are not the guy in the next cubicle.
We are talking about men who have have gone through rounds and rounds of
natural selection, the alphas of the alphas.
So, essentially, if you are that woman, you will be comparing dick sizes
with other alpha males. And you know you already have a bigger dick than 99
% of the guys under the sky. Nonetheless, dressing in a feminine way and
reminding of the sharks around you that you are a woman probably does more
disservice to you than bringing social advantages (at that point, "social
advantages" become a petty concept). You dress to make other men
automatically stand at attention, salute to you as a general, and think
