去年买的新房子,builder已经做了一些landscape,铺了草地,前院靠house的一圈种了各
种shrub and flower. 但是前院大部分地方还只是大块草坪,我有心种开一片地出来种
些flowering trees like dogwood, cherry, Janpanese maple tree and red maple
tree. 但是又怕自己乱种一气的不好看.
这里有没有人知道做landscape时需要考虑哪些问题?有什么规则可循?或者又什么好的
网站可以学习学习?

1, you need know the USDA zone of your area and choose right plants
2, think about the full size of the plant when there are mature
3, text your soil before plant
4, Dog wood is good, cheery is kind of troubled with disease, japanese Maple
is kind of expensive and need special care during the first couple of year.
Red maple is not my favorite anyway

thanks for input.
1. the zone is 8, so all of them are good in my area
4. what kind of special care should be taken for Japanese Maple?
I also consider flowering pear tree, like cleveland pear tree which has
beautiful white flower during the early spring and red foliage in the fall.
all of those five kinds of tree are popular in my area. So I suppose the
soil should be fine for these tree. Am I right?

ok, if you are in zone 8, you can have a lot of shub and flower.
Two year ago, we planted more than hudred of japnese maple for trial (zone 8
)and 2007 estern frost killed most of them. :). you need protect them when
such weather comes, i know some people put a tent on it to cover the tree( i
am not joking, you really can do it). and during some, keep the root cool !
Be prepared to lost. it's expensive.

get a soil test dont assume anything
peach is pretty easy in Zone 8. just check the drainage of your yard.

hehe,今天跑了Lowe's , Homedepot and local nursery store,买了6棵杜鹃,一株手指
粗的Japanese Maple, 一株半人高的桂花,还有一株一人多高的正在开花的dogwood,还
有2cu的soil, 3cu的pine mulch, 下午3点半开始和公公一起种,6点就种完了.
最累的就是种dogwood,坑有直径1米,深1米,两个人轮番上阵,也花了有半个小时.
那株Japanese Maple真是便宜啊,才$19.99, 半人多高,树型还成,我查了网,和你说的一
样,虽然标签上说sun to shade,但是它实际上只能接受morning sunlight, japanese
maple有很多品种,我买的这个说能长到20'Tx20',只好放弃原来想种在离房子近的地方
的想法了,在后院找了个半阴半阳的地方种.

unbelievable, 19.9???? r u sure what you got is japanese maple? nomally it
cost you about 100

的确是Japanese maple,不大,大概是baby吧,所以便宜,树干有手指头粗细,半人高.
$100多的就大多了,比一个人高了,而且也有些树型了.

I know you are going to like what I am going to say
they grow very slow and you probably will lost them during the next couple
of year for such a baby tree unless you babysitting it.

这是我的Japanese maple, 你给看看? 是不是太小了?
还有我读了很多网,说Japanese maple害怕dry wind and hot afternoon sun,所以我把
这棵小树种在有一点点树阴的地方,
我们这里夏天还是比较热的,但是我发现不少人家就在空地上种一棵Japanses maple,当
然是比较大比较成型的那种,好象也活的好好的,是不是这树大了,就不怕暴晒了?

thy are underforest tree so need shade during the young stage and when they
grow up, they can take more sun.
Japanese maple害怕dry wind and hot afternoon sun,
you are right and they can cause sun scotch duringt he summer and winter if
you dont block the wind

那这么说,等我家这棵小树在树阴下长大了,我再刨了挪到full sun的front yard去, 成
不?会不会树已经适应了shade,猛得搬家到full sun会死?

no, no, you dont need move. take it easy.
what I mean is they can not tolerant too much sun when they are young.

I know what you mean. Now I planted that little tree in the shade (can get
morning sun though). After two or three year growing, can I move it back to
the full sun area, like my front yard?

hehe, I dont recomment that coz you dont have equipment to dig a big enough
root ball. :)

hehe, or you bury a 20 gal pot in the ground and plant your tree.hehe, them
you can dig that pot out couple of years later and replant it.

hehe,挖深点,好松松土,又配了些好土进去,最后放树的时候坑里面已经填了一半的土了.
