Getting your child into nature:
…Try to conjure up the “secret” place you retreated to when you were
distressed as a youngster. For me it was an oak tree, for my oldest sons it
was the brambly lot behind our house, and for my youngest it was the
neighborhood creek. Nature nourishes our children’s minds and spirits and
generally moves at the slow pace that children are most comfortable with.
Just watch a couple of kids spend hours at the water’s edge – looking,
skipping and occasional stone, or picking their heads up as a flock of geese
passed by. No child is better off in front of a computer or practicing the
time tables. Childhood is precious. It is not preparation for high school,
college, or profession but a belief and irreplaceable period of time when
children are entitled to the privilege of being children.
