May I ask some information about life there? I am interested in a position
in UMBC (Goddard Earth Sciences & Technology Center) in Maryland. I want to
know the enviornment there and base salary, blabla.

GESTC and JEST both off-campus units, all soft-money. Relying on the
monster of GSFC, it should relatively easy to hang on there for long time.

What does it mean 'soft money'? I have kept contact with a senior scientist
in GSFC for a while and I am now considering making an application to his
post-doc which is administrated by the GESTC. He told me there is not too
much differences between NPP and post-doc in GESTC but NPP may be more
prestigious as applicants compete for funds directly.
I also would like to know more about GEST? And Greenbelt? I haven't made an
decision yet. Any more detail is greatly appreciated!

NPP requires J-1 visa, right? J-1 is not eligible for green card application
, I believe.

Have you submitted your application yet? I have just sent my Statement of
Work to an advisor there who said he will refine it before I submit it to
GEST.
