Position: Researcher/Meteorologist in Numerical Weather Prediction, Application and Analytics
Location: Beijing
IBM is developing smarter solutions in renewable energy, and for this area,
IBM Research – China is the key innovative unit. We are continuously recruiting
top professionals in this area to create a new era by solving critical/challenging
problems to create great business value for our clients. We provide very competitive
packages, and a platform to build and develop career for young meteorologists
to conduct their expertise for industry solutions.
The candidate would be responsible for the operation and enhancement of
numerical weather forecasts to support those weather-sensitive decision-
making applications. The successful candidate will work with the extant team
to improve and maintain operational capabilities, and incorporate state-of-
the-art modeling and analysis techniques that are part of an end-to-end solution
with applications. In addition, the candidate will work with the team to define
and execute a research and development agenda, and be able to invent
and implement new techniques. The candidate will have strong communication
skills and a desire to see new technology applied in a real-world scenario.
A successful candidate will interact with the scientific and business personnel
at IBM, as well as collaborators outside of IBM, participate and make presentations on
their works and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
The candidate must possess expertise on the use of numerical weather prediction
models, e.g., WRF, MM5 and ARPS, in a high-performance computing environment.
This expertise should include advanced knowledge of atmospheric physical processes,
especially for boundary layer and/or mesoscale meteorology, demonstrated skill in
analyzing/visualizing model outputs and verification statistics, and a publication
record showing scientific leadership. Experience with applications in the energy
industry such as electric distribution operations and renewable power forecasting
is preferred. An understanding and utilization of ensemble-based modeling methods
and data assimilation techniques (EnKF, 3D/4D-Var, etc.) in the context of the
aforementioned numerical weather prediction models would be highly preferred.
Academic Requirements: The candidate must have a master or doctoral degree in
meteorology, atmospheric or related sciences from an accredited college or university.
Required Skills: Strong computing skills and extensive experiences in a Unix/Linux
environment, programming (e.g., Fortran, C/C++) and scripting (e.g., shell, perl,
python). Use of high-performance parallel computing environment (e.g., IBM AIX,
Linux clusters). Utilization of meteorological data formats and structures (e.g.,
netCDF, GriB). Use of tools for statistical analysis of forecasts (e.g., R, Matlab, MET).
Desirable Computing Skills: Visualization, graphics and image processing (e.g.,
NCL, GrADS, GEMPAK, Vapor, RIP, etc.), Java and Web programming/deployment
, parallel computing.
