My friend got offers from University of Michigan and University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. She just graduated from high school in China this year
and she's never been to the States before. If you have any experience with
any of the school, such as weather, community, housing, etc, could you
please kindly share it?

For under and most of graduate major, UM is way better.

有钱啊,
现在国内的人这么臭屁啊。
对了，有钱的话上个哥伦比亚，NYU,Georgetown什么的不就行了，
何必花40多万一年去乡下找罪受。

也许她有奖学金也说不定。不过能同时在这两所学校拿udergraduate奖学金的中国学
生还是很难得。

UM is a more comprehensive school with better program in liberal arts,
social science and economics than UIUC. UIUC is mostly a engineering school,
with better program in natural sciences, chemistry, physics, and
engineerings, computer, EE, than UM.
So I guess it all depends on her interest.
Both places are cold in winter. Both are near big cities, Detroit and
Chicago. UM has a very good football team, while UIUC is good at basketball.

我们学校大学教育还是很全面。如果不是要读理科的比如化学，生物之类的，别的方面
都不差。不过，要学好，竞争非常大。我见识过一个东南亚来的华人，普通话说得很好
，花了1年半修完所有的学分，大学毕业，去哈佛医学院读。也见识过，一些比较差的
从国内出来的读大学学生，当然也有素质不错的。如果要读医学，我们学校还是比较好
，进入医学院的比例相对来说（据说）比较高。学校太大，无法笼统的说。
UIUC也不差。工程，science 都在top10里面，只是地方比较偏，出门不方便些。而且
周围没有可以玩的地方。读理工科的，还是UIUC比较好。

Hi Guys:
no body mentioned about the great Michigan football program. I think you
guys spend way too much time in the lab. heyhey..
she is here for undergrad, I prefer Michigan. I spend my undergraduate study
here in the US (not Michigan). A school with a great football program
always has great campus culture. It will be eaiser for a kid just came out
of high school to blend in and learn English.
I hope she will enjoy her college life here. it won't be as much fun as
college life in China. but I

I was just trying to give her some of my thoughts. btw, UM sucked badly in
the bowl game. Plus, maybe Michigan is too cold for her. who knows!

大学当然有很多事情可以做了。就看你有没有时间和精力了。当然，学工科可能课程
会重些。当年我学CS的时候，晕啊！从freshman 到 junior 一直都在学，到了senior,
终于有时间玩玩了，还在学校拿了golf课。现在有时间周末就和朋友去打。 golf 还
在努力中，18洞破百没问题，就是短杆还需要加强。
你那个朋友，是自己要来美国，还是家里让她来啊？出来的日子，没那么好过哦！光有
钱也没用的。要不大家在多给点意见，帮她申请个IVEY学校？祝她好运。

这些大公立学校都差不多，没啥好挑的
我觉得还不如读更便宜一点的state university
可以弄个Honor，反而对将来更好
我们也在中西部，离Illinois很近
我跟这边一个学工程的大四学生说UIUC，他居然没听说过
可见美国人根本不知道这些排名啊啥的

以前见过一个杀比华人叫兽在课堂上吹牛，当年我在依里诺依的时候怎样怎样，底下的
老外学生听听一愣一愣的，这个学校在美国名气真的非常一般办。

I'm pretty sure you used UIUC, instead of "university of Illinois",
Most people know the latter, but no too many know the abbreviation.

CS一门课的教授，美国人，UIUC PhD，简历说自己是U of Illinois的
估计一般美国人不知道UIUC这缩写

胡说，UIUC在 us news 上的排名可全是美国人自己整的
不知道的老美也不奇怪，隔行如隔山，关键是你的行业的HR的人知道就行了。
学工程不知道UIUC的老美不知道上的什么破学校，估计和中国某个小地方职业大学里学
计算机的不知道东南大学一样。

感觉上本科UM比U Illinois好不少吧？公立大学前四名：Berkeley, Virginia, UCLA，
Michigan基本上是公认的吧？第五名就会有些争议。
Overall来说，感觉上UM会比Wisconsin或者OSU好，但是要说Illinois比Wisconsin或者
OSU好就很难。当然这都是一家之言。

Glad this thread is still alive. Any update on your friend? Does she like
her school?
Now my friend get to choose between UIUC and Wisconsin. UIUC just hiked
tuition this year. So expensive.
