I recently have developed an idea and partially proved by experiments.
My advisor now feels very interested and asked me for more info and
results to write a proposal for funding.
I wonder:
1)Can I (PhD student) be a Co-PI? Is it normal for me to ask to
be a Co-PI?
2)Since I'm very interested in this area and may want to continue
research in it in academic or industry lab in the future. How can
I 'protect' my benefits?
Thanks in advance for your advices! Any info will be appreciated!

generally speaking, u can not apply as co-PI.
Second, go to conference and talk about your idea so that all people kno
w it's your idea. publish your paper with you as the first author. That'
s all you can do legally and properly. But dont make it a too big deal.
The most important thing is to let your advisor support you in your futu
re career. If you are really good, you should have many good ideas later

right. don't fight with your advisor for this.
If your idea is not related to your advisor's research area, then it's wierd
that he/she wants to write a proposal on it.
If it is related, it is hard to divide the contribution clearly. You cannot
say that you didn't get inspired by your discussion with your advisor. So the
best and most you can do is to be first author and advocate the idea in the
community. It's also good if your advisor can get funding from the proposal,
so that he/she could sup
