a few comments:
1. everything has a process, it takes time. the more you write, the better
you are at it
2. don't be afraid to ask colleagues, mentors, or even your own students to
go over language of your papers and grant proposals; learn from every edit/
comment they made, and bit by bit, you will build your own writing habits,
vocabularies and a list of dos/don'ts (I call it writing ritual).
3. there is usually a language barrier that non native speakers has to jump
across at the beginning; once you get through that, you should also pay
attention to the structure, tone, style and presentation effective in
technical writing.
4. paper writing and grant writing are different
5. best way to learn paper writing is to read good papers
6. best way to learn grant writing is to be on a study section and learn
from the best proposals in the meeting and other reviewer's comments.
7. lastly, you have to spend time, don't rush writing a manuscript/proposal
when you are a week before deadline, give yourself ample time to write,
polish multiple times, get more people to read and comment.
