Here is a chair's reply to my thank-you letter. They did not make an offer
to me in the end. But I have to say that interview experience was the best
of all.
So, never read too much into a nice reply or interview...

applicants and a good number of people interviewing. I was very pleased!
with your interview, and the ability for you to provide an immediate impact
to our program. We have excellent resources and room for a young energetic faculty member as yourself to expand and contribute without "bumping" into others. Your opportunities here in xxx are also great for industry,
and government grants, and cost of living is very good with great schools
for your family. Finally, with Biomedicine being established here, it would
be a good point of leverage for your wife once she has completed her xxx.
I liked your talk - your approach on xxxx you have applied/connected with a
number of other domains - and your interest in xxx related activities fits
well with our interests in interdisciplinary teaching/research. I would like
to see you here - and if you were to come, I think there are some potential
collaborations we could also explore in the field of xxx for xxx [I have/
had support from xxx, xxx, xxx, etc. - and your background would be
excellent for partnering bigger projects].
