Title: A wavelet-based data compression algorithm using a vectorial-
intelligent
dynamic bit allocation strategy for power oscillographic records.
Abstract:
In this paper a compression algorithm for oscillographic records in power
systems is proposed. The algorithm is based on three main components: (i)
the
discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), (ii) a vectorial-intelligent dynamic bit
allocation strategy built upon a self-organizing map (SOM) and (iii) an
efficient entropy coding. The process of dynamic bit allocation was
conceived
as a way of adapting the algorithm to the spectral patterns found in typical
disturbance signals. The DOE/EPRI National Database Repository of Power
System
Events signals were used for the neural network training, the algorithm
validation and the performance analysis. The results show that the proposed
method performed well with respect to the SNR, the compression ratio and the
bit rate. A detailed analysis of the trade-off between fidelity of the
reconstructed waveform and the compression ratio is presented, as well as a
comparison with similar results in the literature.
