Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing innovative and cost-
effective solutions for the development or sustainment of new or improved
techniques, procedures, or products for drilling bits. Activities include
providing technical support to the field and other functional groups through
analyzing and diagnosing product-related issues; understanding the
mechanism of bit-rock interaction; and conceptualizing, designing, and
testing new components and cutting structures.
Responsibilities
o Investigates bit-rock interaction, generates new ideas, and develops
innovative bit-cutting structures with proprietary dynamic drilling analysis
software and laboratory and field testing.
o Develops bit structural integrity analysis tools and performs analyses
to identify and improve structural limiters for different drilling
applications.
o Provides finite-element analysis (FEA) support to field, design,
material, reliability, and manufacturing groups in identifying failure root
causes and in developing new products and processes.
o Conducts and/or participates in technical design reviews; brainstorming
sessions with peers, domain experts, manufacturing, product reliability,
and product engineers to ensure the objectives for new product development
are met. Interacts with product engineers, drilling engineers, and customers
to conduct effective field testing of new products and evaluate bit
performance.
o Generates and maintains product documentation (requirements,
specifications, designs, development, integration, test procedures, and
results) for projects.
Qualifications
o PhD degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
o Strong knowledge of solid mechanics and/or vibration.
o Knowledge of materials engineering and heat transfer preferred.
o Experience in mechanical design and FEA methods.
o Experience in programming and Python scripting preferred.
o Strong analytical skills.
o Experience in generating novel product solutions.
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
