As Disney prepares to release “The Last Jedi”, will it produce another
blockbuster this week? Talks over a $60bn acquisition of much of 21st
Century Fox have reportedly reached the fine-print stage. Rupert Murdoch,
Fox’s chairman, wants to sell the company’s film and TV studio, many of
its cable networks and its stakes in Hulu, a streaming provider, and Sky, a
satellite broadcaster. Disney wants to make more content as it develops its
own streaming service. Questions remain, including what influence the
Murdochs would have at Disney after an acquisition, and what plans they have
for the remainder of Fox, which would include Fox News. Mr Murdoch’s son,
James, may take a senior role at Disney, though not the top job; Bob Iger,
the studio’s CEO, is expected to stay on after his planned retirement date
of 2019 if the deal happens. But, as both will know, all scripts are open to
revision.
