Remember the proactive parent, an 80-20 member, who wrote the "heart-felt, "no holds-barred letter from a Chinese American," shown below?
"We, Chinese Americans, often relish ourselves as the smartest and the most educated ethnic group in the country, but in some aspect, we are also the most stupid and selfish. We spend $35 per half hour to give our
children a piano lesson, countless hours of after school to let them get ahead academically, move to good school districts, get group average API of 997 or above, without asking whether the academic performance will translate into equal opportunity in school admission. . . . Each of us busy educating our kids while hoping someone else would be doing the heavy lifting for the greater community. It is very selfish and has served us very badly. . . .
Success is NOT defined as you have to be three times as good to get the same opportunity (This is what most Chinese American parents are preparing their children for). . . . Your 80-20 membership will be the best $35 or $50 you have ever spent on your children."
Below is a very different letter from a very different parent. This
parent said his children were unfairly treated by Ivy League school's admission policy. He suggested:
"I have some advice for Asian kids trying to get into the Ivies. . . . Change your last name to an Anglo name. I'm almost serious about that."
He even gave an example: "My granduncle changed his name to Wood from Woo in the early 1900's to avoid discrimination."
Let's empathize with those Asian immigrants of a century ago who
anglicized their names. They faced impossible odds, so they sacrificed
their dignity to eek out a life. Today, sacrificing one's self-respect and dignity to survive in the US is no longer necessary. All we have to do is to put our shoulders to the wheel and push for equal opportunity. An example? "Your 80-20 membership will be the best $35 or $50 you have ever spent on your children," said the proactive parent.
The frustrated parent, not an 80-20 member, is not alone. There are
hundreds of thousands of parents like him in our community -- all the more reason to help 80-20 PAC grow, we think.
Both letters were from REAL persons. A few words were changed, a few
deletions were made in the SAD letter to honor his request "to keep somewhat anonymous." See his letter at the footnote.
Which type of parent will you choose to be? Shall 80-20 PAC DOUBLE or DIE on March 21, 2013? You decide!
To join or donate, go http://www.80-20initiative.net or send your
check to 80-20 PAC P.O. Box 603 Osprey, FL 34229.

Respectfully yours,
A volunteer,
http://www.80-20initiative.net . - - - - - - -
The Letter from the parent who half seriously suggested for Asians to anglicize "your last names"
"I would not like this specific info posted, to keep somewhat nonymous. I wanted to give you an example of the apparent bias there is against Asian students at the Ivies. My child just got notifications of the college applications. The student got rejected at basically every Ivy League school and "near" Ivy, except one. Didn't even make the wait list except one.
The child has very high SATs (800 math) close to 800 verbal, 3.8+ GPA
from a nationally well-known very selective private school, four AP courses all A's, all 5's on AP exams. Model student. Was one of a xxx kids in the country selected for an yyy Award, and National Merit Finalist. It's ridiculous.
What more do Asian kids have to do these days to get into these chools?
I had another child who did graduate from Ivy, but he(she) only got into only one, and had an SAT average significantly higher than the other kids at her particular Ivy. It's really unfair. These kids work hard, jump through a lot of hoops to prepare for college only to hit that invisible ceiling. .
. ."
Act! Join 80-20. It's NOT TOO LATE.

Why do we care about IVY so much? Take it easy, it is just a school. It is

build your own ivies. The jews facing discrimination did it. they built
hospitals and medical schools and universities that now rank among the top.
Otherwise go to nonIvies. Drop your love affair on the ivies and stop
doing exactly the same thing as your asian neighbors. an Ivy with 50% asian
american will be a strange kind of place, come to think of it, not
necessarily bad, just a little strange.
Look if there's a fund that build a Asian-American university, that make a
commitment to nondiscriminatory admission, i'll invest or donate. Otherwise
, this is just hot talk and waste of time.
And dropping $35/30 minutes on piano qualifies you to ivies? Come-on. thought it's for your child's pleasure/growth/education. Stop being a hypercompetitive tiger mom. At least be honest.

If it's private school: As long as the Asians keep applying in droves
despite being discriminated against, the schools can do whatever they want,
and should.
If it's public school: They can make a reasonable argument based on
equality that they should represent the tax-payers or the electorate.
Neither of which should particularly favor asians or the "superior" brainiac
or the supremely pushed.
In either cases, the size of pie (total enrollment for the "prestigious"
schools, medical schools, hospital residencies) is fixed or growing very slowly. You can choose to throw a
lot of money at Ivies to send your kids in, or push your kids to the
limit of teenage endurance and take your chances. Or you can work towards
making the pie bigger, by building your own Ivies.
Equality and fairness all have different definitions. Harvard already have
15% Asian admissions, Berkeley has 40+% Asian admissions. How much more
fair do you want to be? What more do you ask for?
Don't ask what your community can do for you, ask what you can do for your
community. If there aren't enough spots for your superior kids, build
superior institions for them. Or they should build it for themselves.
The African-Americans have Howard U, jewish-americans have Brandeis and
Mount Sinai Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital. What is the Asian American
equivalent?
They have done
their work. It's time we recognize that we need to do our own work instead
just cramming for tests.

Absolutely agree with onetiemyshoe. We should focus more on charities,
community works and volunteer works instead of pushing our kids on SAT 2400.

I agree with "拧成一块", just feel that 80-20 org is a little weird:
especially given its "Double or Die" pledge. and Ivies is just a hot
button issue that they are taking advantage of. If it's just a voting bloc
, the basic membership cost should not be that $30/year, they are limiting
their membership with that kind of membership cost. If there are viable
alternative, yes I'd totally want to learn about it.
Also, for the people who think, oh Ivies are so unfair. Why do you think
you deserve 15+% representation at Ivies (private), given
1: you are -3% US population,
2: you pay -6% tax,
3: i don't know how much you pay to Ivies alumni fund, probably -15%
4: you were certainly not there to help when Ivies were being founded, were
you?
Yeah, you think you deserve it because your kids' SAT is 2400, IQ is 160, 3 classical instruments, blah blah blah? Good luck. Blacks/Hispanics have the population, the Jews
have the money, they built their own institutions. All you have is "
superior" kids, oh right, and tiger mom just yelled from the rooftop, most
likely the product of ruthless pushing...
Maybe you are now wishing you are black or Jewish or Hispanic or white or
whatever. My advise is not to idly wish, do:
1. organize and build your own institutions, so in 100 years, no one can
look down on you for being a free rider. You contributed to making the pie
bigger, you will then deserve your share of the pie.
2. marry into black or jewish or hispanic or whatever.
3. throw a few million bucks at Ivy, most likely your average kid can get in.
4. push your kids to SAT 2401, 14 classical instruments or whatever, so that he can eat the pie without his parents making it. Remember to get him to say "Thank you, Ivies" at least, instead of saying "I deserve Ivies, cos i'm soooo superior". And remember, your spot is probably taken away from some other hardworking kids, likely fellow asians, but also possibly nonasians. Because the pie hasn't increased by your "superiority".
My advice is 1. if you think i'm 洋大人的走狗,so be it.
