One man learned that hanging out with dolls can sometimes be a little
expensive.
On Thursday, the Washington State Patrol released details and a photo from
an unusual traffic stop on the ramp from northbound Highway 167 to
northbound I-405 in Renton on November 29. Troopers were doing an emphasis
patrol on HOV violators when one saw a car with a passenger with “huge,
unblinking eyes”. He quickly realized that it was a doll, not a human, and
stopped the vehicle.
The man driving the car said that he was late for work, and since he wanted
to use the HOV lane he put his daughter’s stuffed Diego doll in the
passenger seat, buckled it up and drove off, hoping he wouldn’t be stopped.
Of course, he was, one of 21 vehicles that troopers stopped in that
November 29 morning emphasis. He did get a ticket. WSP did not identify the
man.
Trooper Julie Startup says that the WSP has established the SR 167/I-405
interchange as a priority for HOV patrols during the morning and evening
rush hours.
